Facebook is all about positivity, which is why they allow users to “like” posts, comments, and pictures of their friends since its inception. In recent months, there has been an ever-growing amount of chatter filling with the internet that Facebook is working on expanding their “like” options. Rumors spread like wildfires with Facebook users claiming that the social network would release a “dislike” button. Sadly, that has yet to happen and, at this point, probably won’t.

Image from Viewpoints on Innovation.

By David R.

There is no doubt that we are in the midst of the digital age. You can’t go anywhere without seeing people with their eyes glued to the screen of their smartphone or tablet. Even on date night, we can’t manage to pry ourselves away from the glowing screen of our phones and have an actual conversation.

As we are double tapping and liking away on Instagram and Facebook, businesses have discovered the marketing advantages these applications provide and are laughing all the way to the bank. Even companies that claim they are not online companies, or that they have no online presence, have to focus on online marketing.

3 Google Projects I Bet You Didn’t Know About

Some of Google's secret projects! Photo courtesy from Mother Nature Beauty.
By Nick K.
It is common knowledge among the business and internet world that industry leaders must keep improving and strive to be one step ahead of the competition. This is obviously much easier said than done, like most pieces of advice in life.

Although for a company such as Google, now Alphabet, they make this process of always being ahead of their competition come naturally to them. Google has always been there when it comes to being at the forefront of making innovative changes in technology and advancing how our world views technology.

Quote of the Month: J.R.R. Tolkien

“Not all those who wander are lost.” - J.R.R. Tolkien

By Megan G.

This famous quote from Tolkien, originally from his poem about the Lord of the Rings character Aragorn, illuminates a drive in those who wander about the world in search of their destiny.  Google Maps Street View adventures echo this grand idea of wandering in search of adventure, from their videos showcasing these amazing treks to the presentation of the Google Trekker program on the Google Maps website.

What In The World Is Google Ideas?

Image from Exkalibur.com.
By Megan G.

Last week, Alphabet executive chairman Eric Schmidt had a private meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.  The sit-down, chat, kick-back, whatever-you-call-it lasted for only about 15 minutes and no one yet knows what the two talked about.

However, TV agency Rome Reports had video of the Pope shaking hands with both Schmidt and Google Ideas director Jared Cohen before the meeting.  It seems that only Schmidt and Pope Francis convened.

While we still don’t know what the tech leader and religious leader discussed last Friday, this news story left the Tek Team with another pressing question.

New Year, New Google: Two New Hires in Global Public Policy and VR

Image from The Conversation.
By Megan G.

For Google, 2015 was the year of many great improvements and industry shakeups, such as their rebirth as Alphabet.  However, it was also a time of messy European Union disputes (that happened to plague much of the tech industry) and lackluster virtually reality.

Thankfully, 2016 has already seen the company make steps to improve both of these aspects of their business, with two brand new hires:  Clay Bavor for VR and Caroline Atkinson for global public policy.  One longtime Googler and the other White House vet, this dynamic duo has positioned Google to take on the more ambitious virtual reality projects in its industry as well as effectively manage its often testy global relations.

Tek Shouts! Product Review: Coin, All Your Cards Wrapped In One

Image from CrowdFund Insider.

By Ishita P.

Let’s face it, the number of cards we try to get rid of in an effort to make our wallets lighter only doubles and subsequently winds up right back into our wallets. It doesn’t quite help that we often use more than one or two cards on a daily basis. We have our ID cards, credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards and even a few gift cards depending on the time of year. It is this first world problem that Coin strives to fix.

Take a Look Back at 2015's Best Google Doodles

By Justin H.

Today’s Google Doodle was created in honor of Alice Paul’s 131st birthday. If you are in need of a brief history lesson, Paul was the American suffragist who was the driving force behind the passing of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. She was also the main advocate of the Equal Rights Amendment and founder of the National Women’s Party.

Google rolls out a doodle nearly every day, and each typically has a neat back-story just like Alice Paul’s. Today’s example made us wonder, what were some of the most memorable doodles of 2015?

Google & Other Tech Companies Say “Nay” To Gov. Internet Surveillance

Image from Buzzfeed.
By Megan G.

Yesterday, a group of high-profile American tech companies jointly released a written evidence statement that argues against a new surveillance law the United Kingdom is currently considering.

The Investigatory Powers Bill, or IP Bill, was introduced by UK home secretary Theresa May in response to the Edward Snowden claims.  Its aim is to, as the name implies, investigate internet use across the UK and give access to citizen websites records to the police, security services, and other public organizations.

Obviously, the American tech world has some reservations about that.

Customer Question of the Month: Which SEO company is best for my small business?

By Nick K.

For many small businesses across the nation, there is a strong chance they have been contacted by at least a one SEO company at some point.

Although it can be quite bothersome having the phone ring with cold calls, that SEO company might be the tool to help your small business succeed. However, the SEO industry is ever-growing and not every company may be the best fit for your small business.

With that in mind, the real question, since there are so many SEO companies on the market today is, “How do I decide which SEO company is best for my small business?”

Happy New Year! The Tek Team wishes everyone a very happy and successful 2016. Long gone are the days of holiday cheer and Christmas decorations.

Although, the spirit of celebration only grows because this week marks the start of the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, also known as “CES”.
