Alas! It is time to rejoice, for mobile search has officially overtaken desktop Google searches worldwide. How should you celebrate this great day? Maybe by conducting some mobile searches? Taking the afternoon off?

Alright, so maybe not. Some users feel this news about mobile search isn’t in fact “news.”
Back in May, Search Engine Land had reported that Google mobile searches officially overtook desktop searches. It was only a matter of time until mobile search would come out on top, mainly due to the increased popularity and incredible convenience of using your mobile device to conduct a search versus a having to be in front of your computer desktop to conduct a search.

According to recent news provided by Search Engine Land, The Verge, and Tech Times, Google’s Senior Vice President of Search, Amit Singhal, stated that mobile search has officially taken over desktop searches globally!

Previously, Google had a handful of countries where the amount of mobile searches had exceeded desktop searches. Google now has combined all the searches they receive worldwide and the total exceeds more than 100 billion searches per month. It is truly remarkable how over half of all Google searches are now performed on a mobile device.

Considering this news, it doesn’t necessarily mean that one should adjust their focus to mainly mobile devices and ignore desktop computers. The amount of web inquires happening is endlessly growing. The amount of desktop searches is still plenty, and although it might have declined slightly, it isn’t totally out of the game.

Google announcing this news only adds to the extreme importance of optimizing your website for mobile devices. 1. While it would be a welcome news to hear that mobile has 'officially' taken over desktop search.

It is not entirely an unexpected news because of the growing influence of mobile usage and innovations in mobile search in the last couple of years.

I pretty do urgent urgent web based search on mobile but this don't takeaway the fact that I still prefer desktop for some real analytical search.

The importance of optimizing for mobile has been highlighted again. Nevertheless, optimizing for desktop should not be ignored as well!

Optimization for different platform will give a business better edge than only those that optimize for mobile alone!

    1. Hey Sunday,

I agree with you that it isn't all that surprising for mobile search to overtake desktop search. This definitely adds to the importance of ensuring your website is optimized for mobile search. It will be interesting to see how the future of Search moves forward. Maybe desktop search will take back the title of most popular search method?
