Tek This Out: Father’s Day Edition!

A cartoon light bulb with the eGumball, Inc. logo in the middle.

This Sunday, June 21, is Father’s Day!

Instead of buying dad another boring tie or coffee mug this year, why not impress him with this bevy of fun facts? He will be overwhelmed with joy when he sees you finally did your homework!

But seriously, you should still buy him a gift. Esquire has 10 ridiculous new gadgets that would knock his socks (and hopefully the hideous tie you got him last year) right off! Buy him a droid, for Pete’s sake.

- Father’s Day is celebrated in over 50 countries around the world on the third Sunday in June, and supposedly began on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.

- It wasn’t until 1966 that Father’s Day became officially recognized on the third Sunday of June, soon becoming an official holiday in 1972. Thank you, Lyndon B. Johnson!

- Halsey Taylor invented the drinking fountain as a tribute to his dad, who contracted typhoid fever from a contaminated water supply back in 1896.

- Father’s Day is the busiest day of the year for collect phone calls.

- 80 million cards are exchanged annually on Father’s Day, with about 25% of them being of the humor category.

- In 2001, Commander Yuri Usachev of the International Space Station received a talking picture frame that his 12-year-old daughter sent him while he was in orbit. RadioShack filmed the presentation of the gift for a television commercial.

No matter what you do, it’s highly unlikely your gift will top that last fact. However, all dads want on Father's Day is a little love and to know that you care! That, and maybe a #1 dad t-shirt.
