Tek This Out!

Monday, April 13th, is Thomas Jefferson’s birthday! The American Founding Father, third United States President and principal author of the Declaration of Independence was born in 1743, and died coincidentally on July 4th, 1826.

In honor of what would have been his 272nd birthday, here are 272 fun Thomas Jefferson facts!

Just kidding. There’s only three.

1. Jefferson is believed to be the first president to have a pet that lived in the White House. He was very fond of birds, particularly mockingbirds. His pet mockingbird Dick often sat upon his shoulder as Jefferson would hum to him while working.

2. He was known to love ice cream, and in fact was a big reason why it is popular in the U.S. today. Jefferson is credited with the first known recorded American ice cream recipe, which can be found right here!

3. Jefferson was an early archaeologist. He ordered 40-million-year-old mastodon bones to be sent to him at the White House, where he laid them out in an attempt to build a skeleton in what is now known as the East Room. Talk about an odd request.

So, there you have it. Happy birthday, T-Jeff! Your legacy will live on forever.
