Google Fiber’s New Year’s Resolution: Bring Lightspeed Internet to All

Image from Slash Gear.

By Megan G.

Public relations teams are the liaison between customer and company, their marketing communications expertise is the key to making a product relatable on a wider scale.  Some brands and products don’t need a ton of PR while others need a little extra help to get the masses on board.

Alphabet (formerly Google) is a vast company with many different divisions branching from it.  Aside from Search, Gmail, Maps, and Android, many of Google’s other endeavors go unnoticed by most of the general public.

For instance, while Google might have no problem selling their latest Android phone, the mention of more under-the-radar products like Google Fiber will still draw a confused “huh?” from many a consumer.  That might soon change with Google’s most recent re-hire:  Gabriel Stricker.  He is a long-time public relations guru with previous experience both at Google and Twitter and a colleagueship with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.

If Apples are to Apples, Is Tim Cook to President?

Image from KLEVINSKAITEJ.

By Tonika R.

President George W. Bush, President Barack Obama... and President Tim Cook? According to a press release by rbb Communications, a good amount of Americans would rather have Apple’s leadership team manage our country instead of politicians.

Google and Ford: Shaping the Future of Automobiles

Potential alliance between The Ford Motor Company and Google?

By Nick K.

It has been quite some time since the exciting news of Google’s self-driving car has reached the surface of the Internet. In previous news on Tek Shouts! we covered breaking news about the self-driving car, as well as a progress update on Google’s project earlier this year. So, it feels like taking a breath of fresh air when revisiting news about Google’s self-driving car.

Without further ado, the latest project developments are that Google has paired up with the Ford Motor Company to build a division of self-driving cars. Although it isn’t officially announced yet, many sources like Forbes, Automotive News, and Yahoo News, say that Ford plans to announce the new joint venture at Consumer Electronics Show, on January 5, 2016.

Festivus for the Rest of Us, Including Google

Photo via rockieszingers.com

By Justin H.

It’s easy to forget what day it is since everyone mentally checked out sometime around 1:30 p.m. last Friday. Every day is a new holiday, such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Green Monday, Red Monday, Blue Monday, etc.

But today is far from another marketing ploy to get us all to spill our bank accounts all over the floor of the local Target. Forget Christmas Eve Eve, today is every anti-consumerist’s favorite holiday. It’s Festivus!

Christmas and Hanukkah are so 2014. All the cool kids celebrate Festivus now, even Google. Just check out the festive aluminum pole right on their homepage.

Top Google Searches That Fascinated Us in 2015

Image from Year in Search 2015 on YouTube.

By Rina M.

Suddenly, it’s 2016; which means you can either gripe about an entire month without  holidays or reinvent a new you because, you know, the whole “New Year, New Me” mumbo jumbo.  Yet before we attempt to lose 20 pounds of holiday weight and commit to a job longer than six months, let’s recall the events of 2015 that have branded our history.

POLL: What Totally Sweet Name Would You Give Android N?

Image taken at the Googleplex

By Megan G.

In light of all the holiday sweets heightening our spirits and enlarging our waistlines, let’s discuss the buzz surrounding Android N, the next Android OS set to release in 2016.  In case you don’t know, Google names all of its Android operating systems after sugary treats like Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, and so on.  For Android N, what could the new name be?

eGumball, Inc. Works With Share Our Selves for Adopt A Family 2015

A group of our employees volunteered at the Share Our Selves Adopt A Family event this past Wednesday, December 16th, in Costa Mesa, CA.

Our team wrapped gifts, sorted food, and helped organize all the donations for Orange County families in need, offering recipients in need some extra cheer during the holidays.

The event’s activities were housed in two large warehouses, where the eGumball team had the task of setting up packages for specific families of Orange County, specifically Costa Mesa.

Before the hard work began, however, the team was given a run-down of what exactly the Share Our Selves organization stands for.

eGumball, Inc. Serves Up Their 3rd Annual Ping Pong Tournament

The Final 4 in the Men's and Women's bracket!
The overhead lights were turned on, the net was assembled, and the floors around the table were cleared. There was the smell of new rubber on the ping pong paddles and the echoes of shoes screeching across the floor. Soon, we would all watch the ping pong ball flying back and forth, cheering on our fellow coworkers.

Questions started to arise, would last tournament’s champion, our Creative Manager Ra’ad, dominate once again? Or would a new champion be crowned? Only time would tell.

Facebook Makes A Local Search Move, Again, Challenging Yelp and Google

The first page of Facebook “Professional Services.”  Image snipped from Facebook.

By Megan G.

Facebook has released a desktop-only feature to their website that allows users to search for the highest-rated businesses in a certain area.  The site has been dubbed “Facebook Professional Services” and, while the feature might not get any points for originality with that name, it could achieve massive sway in the arena of local marketing.

Quote of the Month: Mark Cuban

By Nick K.

“Every no gets me closer to a yes.”
-  Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban at his finest. The multibillion-dollar worth man, investor, author, film producer, Dallas Mavericks owner, philanthropist, and star of his own show, Shark Tank, has done it again, sharing his wonderful words of wisdom on success.

After reading through a ton of Mark Cuban quotes, many of which have a natural “Cuban-ism” twist to them, it did take some time selecting just one for this post. Many of Cuban’s quotes are unique because they break the mold of the traditional adages about finding and following your passion.

Pixel C Tablet Review: Did Google Drop the Ball?

By Justin H.

We live in a ruthless copycat world, and nowhere is this more readily apparent than the tech industry. You can’t make an innovative new product or gadget these days without all the other companies gunning to one up you. This practice likely dates all the way back to the fellow who invented the cup-and-string telephone!

With the Apple iPad Pro and the Microsoft Surface drawing rave reviews from the critic crowd, it was only a matter of time before Google jumped into the fray and released the Pixel C, a 10.2-inch tablet that runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This is Google’s first tablet made without the help of Samsung or HTC, meaning Google not only provided the Android OS, but also the hardware for this brand new gadget!

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and now Green Monday?

By Nick K.

With the holiday season in full swing for the past couple of weeks now, many gifts have been purchased for those close to us, as well as gift cards for those you don’t know how to shop for.

With the major holidays drawing closer and closer, is there any glimmer of hope for those who still need to find those perfect gifts for their loved ones?

Luckily, there is indeed hope for you to complete your holiday shopping with the help of Google. They can make your shopping experience less stressful on even the most hectic of shopping days, including this past Black Friday! However, for those who skipped out on Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, there’s still hope for discounted items on Green Monday!

Tek Shouts! Has Hit 100,000 Page Views!

By Justin H.

Today is a day of reflection, for on this day, December 9, 2015, our beloved Tek Shouts! surpassed 100,000 total page views! Considering we started covering all things tech just over a year ago, the Tek Team is elated with the progress up to this point.

As we continue to bring our readers the latest and best of tech industry news with our own spin on it, we are always looking for ways to take Tek Shouts! to the next level. Posting content every day has been extremely beneficial, as have all of our content marketing efforts. The next task of order is to build up that all-important email subscriber list!

On this day of reminiscing, let’s have a look back at our most successful blog posts in terms of traffic, shall we? It’s always great to look back on past articles, because no one wants old posts to fade into oblivion once they disappear from the home page. That’s blogging 101!

Google Helps You Navigate Through the Daze of Holiday Shopping

What’s Your Strategy for Holiday Shopping This Year? Image by Fearless Fashionista

By Jessie D. S.

It’s the holiday season—so whoop-de-do? For many this means entering the hyperbolic thunder dome of congested parking lots, seemingly infinite lines, and the hustle and bustle of heightened holiday tempers. “If only Christmas could come without ribbons, tags, packages, boxes, or bags!” thinks every eerily silent shopper who has to wait in unbearably long lines.

Sure, this could have been avoided had you stuck to the carefully constructed plan you crafted last year while facing the exact same situation. “Holiday shopping commences in September!” you hopefully exclaimed, “None of this holiday shenanigans next year!” Easier said than done, right?

4 Google Maps Features You Can’t Live Without!

By Nick K.
It is no surprise that Google Maps is one of the top navigation apps in the tech world. Time and time again, Google Maps is always ahead of the competition in terms of new features and accessibility, but, most importantly, the app is free and has no ads.

Since Google keeps on implementing updates for Google Maps, it is often easy to miss out on some incredibly useful features they have. To save you the time and effort, the Tek Team has created a list of some features you might not know Google Maps has!

Indoor Maps

Starting off our list is Google Maps’ indoor maps feature. The app has the ability to not assist with street directions, but also navigating the great indoors. This type of feature is ideal for navigating a large outlet mall or shopping center, helping you get around instead of fighting the hordes of holiday shoppers just to find a directory.

Google Cardboard Just Made Your Camera Roll More Exciting

By Justin H.

I was as thrilled as you are when I found out smartphones were able to capture panoramic photos. Finally, my stunning imagery could be seen on a 360-degree scale! I could not only Instagram my Chipotle burrito, but people could bask in the restaurant’s ambiance right along with me!

Unfortunately, my world came crashing down when I suddenly realized even the best of iPhones and Androids could not counteract my shaky hands. Thus, my panorama shots often look as if I sneezed halfway through taking the photo.

I know I was also not alone when I chuckled at Google Cardboard when it was released. The typical first impression would be to scoff at the notion that any cardboard-based virtual reality gadget could become relevant in today’s age of high-tech toys!

Tek This Out! Google’s New Approach to Ads

Often times when using smartphones, we are pestered with ads. How obnoxious – they are! We are rudely interrupted when browsing the Internet on our smartphone or when using apps, and unless we want to pay actual money to get rid of them, we are hopeless. Thankfully, our phone calls and text messages are not hampered by these ever obnoxious and pestering ads.

So, clearly pop-up ad formats aren’t all that successful for users. The ads turn users away from using an app, which is a lose-lose situation for both the app creators and users. An app might have everything going for it, such as great UI and accessibility for users, but the annoying amount of ads can turn users away from ever using it.

Customer Question of the Month: Google+ Redesign

By Justin H.

Many speculations have been made of the new Google+ layout, as the social media platform continues to search for its niche.

We have covered the ballyhooed redesign here at Tek Shouts!, but the jury is still out on its effectiveness. One demographic that appears to be affected the most in its early stages is business owners.

Announced on November 17, the Google+ redesign was aimed at simplifying the use of Collections, Communities, and your home stream. Some of the new features include the ability to create and edit communities on Android devices, multi-login on iOS, the ability to share public posts on other networks, new notifications, and a few other tidbits.

However, the glaring issue is that local business reviews are no more, which brings about the question: What does the new Google+ format mean for my business?

Search Google for the Best Cyber Monday Deals, 2015

By Lauren C.

We understand. You just couldn’t deal with Black Friday. The crowds, the stampedes, the lines. The last thing you wanted to do was head to the mall after spending a wonderful day watching football, drinking beer, and stuffing your face with scrumptious Thanksgiving food.

Thanks to our evolving, tech-friendly society, Black Friday is no longer the only option for early Christmas shopping and affordable deals. You can now search for these same deals, and even better bargains online without ever leaving your couch or fighting the nasty crowds at the mall. Cyber Monday allows you to find fantastic discounted goods online from participating retailers across the country. Luckily, as Cyber Monday has become more popular over the years, more and more retailers are participating in it. This means more great deals for you!

Google My Business allowed business owners to upload their holiday store hours for web users on Google Search – a small change that can mean a world of difference to users and potential customers.

Product Review: Slack, the Tech World’s Favorite Communication App

By: Justin H.

It’s roughly 2:30 p.m. on a Friday afternoon. The Tek Team readies a mass email to everyone at eGumball’s lovely corporate office. In its contents are all the articles and happenings that Tek Shouts! covered for the week, typically accompanied by a lighthearted, funny meme to give everyone a solid chuckle. This is a fairly standard practice among cubicle warriors, as workers begin to loosen their ties and wind down at the end of the day.

But then, it happens. Yes, it. IT!

Flippin’ Bob from accounting just had to reply all, because he couldn’t let everyone go home on Friday without being subjected to his lame, out of touch sense of humor. If you’re particularly unlucky, Janet from billing replies all again, taking it too far and sending a risky joke which casts an awkward spell over the whole office, and honestly, should probably get her fired.

Your meme wasn’t funny, Bob. Get it together, Janet.

Quote of the Month: Jack Dorsey

By Justin H.

“I’m giving ~1/3rd of my Twitter stock (exactly 1% of the company) to our employee equity pool to reinvest directly in our people.” – Jack Dorsey

It’s been quite the and month for Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey. For one, today is his birthday! Happy 39th, Jack!

In honor of his birthday, and his overall wise words and success stories, Tek Shouts! has awarded him with the quote of the month. It may or may not be slightly better than the $1 billion he has already made today (but really, it is).

Is Google+ Finally Worth a +1?

By Nick K.

"If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” – William Edward Hickson

These words could not be more fitting for Google’s social media platform, Google+. At last, the wait is finally over in what feels like years upon years of waiting for Google+ to perish. Spoiler alert, Google+ is NOT DEAD!

Shame to all of those haters who believed Google+ was a lost cause and that Google wasted their time, effort, and resources on the social media platform. The Tek Team, as well as other fellow Internet communities, still had faith in Google+ this entire time.

Google Partners with the AHA to Help Cure Heart Disease

By Lauren C.

Many of us personally know someone who has suffered from heart disease. In the United States alone, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Coronary heart disease is the most common, and deadly type of heart disease, which currently kills over 370,000 people a year. Heart attacks are on the rise as well, as 735, 000 Americans suffer from them annually. Increased obesity rates, a lack of exercise, and other factors have contributed to these catastrophic numbers.

So what can be done to solve this health crisis? Other than encouraging health lifestyles and investing in new medications, there have been numerous initiatives and charities which have worked to resolve this epidemic. Google has decided to now come to the rescue with its own bold initiative, including a $50 million grant for a team that is seeking to cure heart disease.

13 Ways to Kill Blog Traffic, in Honor of Friday the 13th

By Justin H.

I heard you wrote this unbelievable blog post the other day that was going to take the Internet by storm. Once inspiration struck, you systematically researched and planned all of your attack points to construct what would eventually be the Holy Grail of blog posts. You read articles, you made outlines, you poured your heart and soul onto the keyboard and once you were done you wrung every meaningless, nonsensical word out of that 2,000-word post like the suds out of a wet bath towel.

And then, no one read it. *plays tiny violin*

Innovator of the Month: Jeff Bezos

Who is Jeff Bezos?

Jeff Bezos is an American entrepreneur who is the founder, and current CEO of the world-famous e-commerce website, Amazon.com. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico back in 1964 and was legally adopted by his stepfather when he was 15 years old. Bezos went to Princeton University, studying computer science, as well as, electrical engineering.

In 1994, Bezos’ career would take a major turn, for this was the year that he founded Amazon.com. He and his wife had left their jobs at D.E. Shaw & Co to move to the West Coast. They ended up moving to Seattle, Washington, mainly because Bezos did not want to miss out on the opportunity, of the soon to be internet boom.

Google Maps Makeovers: Offline Maps, Voice Alerts, & APIs

Image from The Dissolve.
By Megan G.

As much as certain providers would love to claim, Wi-Fi is not available everywhere.  Free, unending wireless service is a dream of the future, and until that day, we are restricted to letting apps eat up our smartphone data or to make do without the convenience of mobile technology.

Luckily, one app is making our mobile lives a little easier.  Google Maps is now available offline!

That’s the big story of this week, but Google Maps has been receiving quite the makeover in other areas, as well!  Let’s catch up with last few crucial updates for our favorite navigation application.

Tek This Out!: Let's Face It - The History of Playing Cards

We’re all familiar with the traditional deck of playing cards. There’s 52 of those bad boys in a deck, but have you ever really looked at them? What’s the deal with the face cards?

Funny you should ask! Believe it or not, there’s an interesting story behind them.

Each of the four kings represents an actual ruler from ancient history. The king of diamonds stands for the wealthy Julius Caesar; the king of spades represents David of Israel, whose sword was modeled after the weapon he took from Goliath; the ruthless Alexander the Great (or Charlemagne, depending on who you ask) is the king of clubs; the king of hearts represents Charles VII of France, who was the only one of the four to actually see his face printed on a playing card. It is believed that he had plenty of time to play cards once he fell ill with a fever and was bedridden for much of his life.

It’s time to start preparing those festive holiday plans and long gift lists. Luckily for you, this could finally be the year that doesn’t involve last minute shopping.

So, what if there was a way to get a jumpstart on your holiday shopping plans and minimize those yearly stresses?

How to Grow Your Business’ Instagram Account

By Justin H.

There the Tek Team was, a few months back, pondering each and every way to grow the eGumball brand. As we slaved away like true keyboard warriors, bringing you the latest and greatest in the tech and marketing industries, we felt something was missing.

Social media had been going well, and Tek Shouts! was continuing to improve, but we were neglecting one aspect – we had no face for our brand!

One of the best ways to capture the personality of a company is through photos, and what better way to share those photos with your customers than building an Instagram account? We had created an Instagram profile at eGumball a while back, but decided that five photos and 17 followers who had forgotten we existed was simply not enough.

Customer Question of the Month: What’s the Problem With Having Duplicate Business Listings?

By Lauren C.

Are you a brand new, enthusiastic, eGumball customer? If so, great! You’ve signed the contract, picked your keywords, and are ready to get started. But before you start jumping for joy and expecting a higher ranking tomorrow, stop and answer the following important questions.

Did you happen to sign up with another SEO company that failed to deliver on their promises, but began creating citations of your business listing online? Or perhaps you’ve moved several different times and have different addresses and phone numbers for your business in different directories? If so, you may suffer from having duplicate listings, which can negatively affect your online ranking.

#RallyForCODEGIRL, A Call to Action for Girls in Computer Science

By Megan G.

A full-length movie is available on YouTube for free!  No, this is not some shady ad for pirated content, but a chance for young girls to be inspired to work in the field of computer science.  Have you known young girls and women who have a knack for science, but sheepishly aspire towards other, more ‘feminine’ callings?  Computer science is a boys-only club no more, despite what popular (yet grossly misinformed) opinions might tell you.

Yesterday, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced that YouTube will host the film CODEGIRL for free until this Thursday, November 5th.  The documentary follows high school teams competing in Technovation, a “global technology entrepreneurship program for girls.”  Not unlike the Google Lunar XPRIZE, the Technovation program offers incentives for innovation.  The big prize for Technovation is $10,000.

So, what are the team’s missions?  To create a mobile app that helps their local community.
